Very clean bright store not like your usaul consigment stores with alot of crap. Nice clothing if not brand new then barely used was very happy with the staff and the merchandise. Will be back again and again.

I hadn't read any of these reviews before I went to this store to leave some things for consignment. Everything was clearly explained and some of my items have already been sold. Had I read some of these reviews I might not have gone in, what a mistake that would have been. The staff were quite courtiuos and helpfull, the payout rules were clearly exlpained and accetable to me. Having worked in the retail business I know how hard it can be to make everyone happy all the time so just wanted to say personally I am a HAPPY CUSTOMER

One visit the owner and daughter were talking about how made up names are not cute. With no idea what my childs name was. Next visit a ridiculous man told my son and niece not to play on the floor, and when my niece gave him a funny look he said "oh you hate me now" yikes! Does this guy have regection issues?! When we left he yelled from the door "I was talking to the girl not the parents" I no longer even go in this store! gross workers, insanly high prices, and the chance of your littles getting told off!!

Wasn't sure if I could actually give you a 0 so I gave you 0.5/5 Stars. The only thing good I see in the change of ownership is that you can actually walk down the aisles, so I guess you can have the half a star for that.

BUT...Your policies on paying out those of us bringing in stock...SUCKS! I called to get paid out (about $50) worth of sold items and was told that I couldn't get an appointment for about 6 weeks! I understood that you have a new policy and require us to have an appointment but a month and a half is an absolute joke. I get it that you don't want to have a lot of cash on hand, but there are other ways to do this too. Hey, how about business cheques? Put a credit on my credit or debit card. Allow cash payouts towards the end of the day (when you likely have cash on top of your float). EVERY OTHER BUSINESS CAN DO IT...WHY CAN'T YOU?

To add to my frustration when I came into renew my items I had to painstakingly go through a print out list and hunt for my items in store from top to bottom. I was not told this beforehand so I had my five year old with me (not a fun process and I can imagine how much worse it would be with a younger child) Many of the items are not in their correction sections and others were improperly tagged. I was unable to find a number of the items at all. Even though I had looked through several times through one section or another. I received very little assistance from the one staff person available (she tried to help, but was too busy serving other customers).

The whole point of selling through a consignment store is that we want to do less work in exchange for a share of the sale. Frankly, I do less work selling online, get more money, spend less time, have less hassles and don't have to drive anywhere!

Hand Me Downs...if you want your business to fail go ahead and keep approaching your suppliers and customers this way.

GOOD LUCK!

I am a new mother and have found Hand Me Downs to be a godsend. I was able to purchase most of my daughters furniture and supplies at less than 1/3 the price at most retailers. My parents also purchased a highchair and stroller so I don't have to bring these over whenever I come. I will soon be opening an account to be a supplier. Interestingly, most of the supplier complaints on this site are clearly explained on the information that is provided to new members. It seems to me if they read it, they would understand. I have never had trouble with the girls that work there, they are delightful. This will be my primary source to keep expenses down and to be green through reuse as my family continues to grow.

Prices are way too high for second hand items!!! They sell items sold in the dollar store new for much higher. They make you think you are getting a deal when in fact you are not. I would rather shop at value village.

One time I was sold a dirty item and told if i clean it, it would be fine and she would give me a big discount. I went in the next day and they had the same item, sparkling clean for the same price she sold me the dirty one at. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!

Get some integrity if you want people to keep coming to your store!

Just an FYI to anyone who wants to sell items at hand me downs Oshawa ..the new owner is a total ass and I called yesterday to see if I could pick up my money owing to me and she said yes, i went in today to pick up the money and he said I had to make an appointment for sept 26 to pick up money ...absolutely ridiculous when in my contract it states nothing that I have to make an appointment to pick up my money ..I'm am so frustrated and angry its not the money its the point of the matter that the contract says different... I don't no what to do but I have to wait 3 weeks for 15 dollars really??? Please please be advised to not sell your items with the shop.

Have been buying and selling clothes here for years. Always have nice clean unworn items at low cost. Consignment policy is fair and not unlike most consignment stores, always fast turn around on quality items. Have another grandchild on the way so see you soon.

Dropped off 6 diaper boxes of clothes to be sold. When I called the first time to collect my pay out was told they were extending time of my items on shelf as they weren't put out right away and I should give it another month. When I tried calling back a month later could never get anyone on the phone. Finally spoke to someone and was told have to wait over a month for my payout and the sad part is it is only for $20!!! I was told it would take 3 business days when I signed the contract and dropped off the clothing. Seems like the business is in financial difficulty if you ask me, I understand they need notice that you are coming to ensure enough money on hand but this is ridiculous. They had no problem making the money and collecting interest in the bank all this time but I'm sure I won't be paid any interest for the time they've been holing my money. Would never use their service again very sketchy!!!

Its funny though how you say all this but dont say how you just last week came into store after missing and missing and missing your appts to pick up your 20$$.
When people that have hundreds of dollers in there accounts have no problem waiting. I guess the 20 really made you rich.
Next time you should donate cause most that stuff in those 6 boxes was crap and even a place that excepts donations would not take.
Stains and holes everywhere.
Find another hobby lady.
Store has done buisness like this for a very long time and let me tell you that 20$$$ would not bankrupt a buisness or your comment. Your clothes on the other hand might.
DIRTY!!!!!

oh wow, bashing a custumer online? Classy, that will bring you business! Unfortunately some people really need $20 and are counting on the money. consider yourself fortunate if you don't.

You have to make appointment to get your money...you don't even know how much their paying you for each items. You also have to pick your items off racks etc when your 3 months is up. Their pocketing more then 50% of each item. What a pain , I rather donate it now.

I am just not happy having to set up an appt to get my money. Last time i just ended up using my cash account to make more store purchases, which I am sure is what they want. I will be hesitant to sell there again as it seems like a real hassle to get your money back.

I love this store...I had a problem with one item I bought and they took it back apologizing for their mistake but hey we all make mistakes...sold hundreds of dollars worth of stuff and clothes my two kids...sure when I wanted my cash I had to wait but they explained that for safety they can't keep a lot of cash instore and they never know how much or when people are coming. I would recommend this store to anyone with kids.

I think the store is ok other then buying a broken high chair.... Think they should check straps before selling things people buying then think they work till the find out it don't. Then you try to take items back and they tell you the year is up they can't take it back. Not such a good way to keep people coming in..

The main concern that I have with this store is that you have to book an appointment to go in and collect any money in your account. I went in yesterday and was advised that I can't pick any money owed to me for over a month. I must show up on the selected day otherwise I'm out of luck. They don't give payouts as you come in because they may not have enough money in the till.
I think this is bad business...shows poor money management on the owner!
Comment by dilly on Jan 19, 2012
Imagine if all consignees showed up at the same time wanting to collect. No store is going to keep that kind of cash in the till, not these days. I think the owner is being responsible and orderly in the payment of consignment funds, in order to best protect everyone concerned. It's unfortunate this policy, smart in my opinion, inconvenienced you, but I don't think the business deserved a low rating and poor review for being security conscious. Make the appointment, get your money, be happy.

In fact, I have come to change my opinion a little. I was informed last evening that the girl that told me about the month long wait to collect is new and just learning the ropes. I believe she was following directions to the "T" without flex. Not her fault, she's being a good employee. The owner called me directly to discuss things. I do feel a little better as she is more flexible with a payout.
