Paul Denys and his assistant, Sandy, provided excellent work for a roof repair job that turned into an entire rebuild. External support (structural engineer and insulation contractor) were scheduled and organized by Paul without a hitch. Paul was patient and very adaptable especially when the neighbour decided at the last minute to complete his portion of the roof work on his own. Paul and Sandy were never idle and ensured that each job, large or small, were done to exacting detail. Paul and Sandy were always on time and provided updates, as necessary.

I tend to have a lot of questions and Paul was always very happy to share his knowledge on building sciences and provide recommendations.

It was great to work with someone who takes pride in every aspect of their work. I will definitely have Paul work on future projects for the house and I highly recommend him to anyone looking to have work done on their house.

If you want the best possible job done, with the best materials, in a timely fashion, and with the least possible inconvenience Paul Denys is your man. In particular, his expertise in restoration work is top-notch.
If, on the other hand, you want the cheapest shoddy work possible, he is not.

Paul Denys is a professional in every way. I have dealt with him on a variety of renovations and repairs for over 20 years. He is always patient in explaining the source or sources of problems and potential remedies. He is very knowledgeable about building science and wants to do each job the right way. In my most recent dealing with Paul, he actually turned down potential work because he felt more time was needed to isolate the cause of the issue we were discussing. This kind of decency is rare in the field. Over the years, it has been a relief to know that I can call on Paul for advice and assistance however small or large the task.

Paul has done a number of projects at my 85yr-old house, and all have gone extremely well.
Complete bathroom replacement, kitchen upgrade, dormer rebuild, closets installed in knee-wall spaces, and assorted plumbing and electrical fixes.
Paul presents options to suit the decor style or budget, has a great sense of design and colour, gets everything cleaned up at the end of each day, accommodates customers with allergy issues (dust, chemicals, etc) and does just an all-round good job.
I would recommend to any of my neighbours, i.e. folks that I am going to see daily.

BATHROOM AND LAUNDRY January 10, 2013
By: MEG

I worked with Paul for 2 projects on our 100+ year old home. We added a laundry room to the main floor, and it fits in so seamlessly with the rest of the house most guests don't notice we have done it (which was the intention). The second project was a renovation of the master bath, which modernized the room but is still in keeping with the character of our home. With both projects, the planning process was very interactive and enjoyable. The quality of Paul's work is excellent. During the renos Paul and Sandy were very professional and minimized the interruption to our daily lives as much as possible. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Paul Denys to anyone in the future.

Paul Denys was recommend by a neighbor. He repaired a two storey porch on the front of my house in installed eavetroughs. I knew that I was working with someone who cared for his craft when he spend over an hour with me reviewing the work that had to be done and discussing all the methods of repair. He started work on the day his promised and finished the work on time and on schedule. During the work he reviewed the progress and when problems arose his discussed solutions. I was particularly impressed by his sincere desire to keep the historical architectural features and not demolish them because they were difficult to replicate or work around.

I would certainly recommend Paul Denys to everyone and will use his services again in the future.

My neighbor and I hired Paul to undertake major repairs/rebuild of the front porch of our semidetached house. The original porch was still standing after 100 years with minimal maintenance so it was need of some serious work. Paul was the only contractor who was willing to undertake the job in stages over two calendar years - every other contractor insisted the only way to do this job was to demolish everything at once. Paul and his assistant Sandy worked efficiently & swiftly without compromising their craftmanship. Their attention to detail was superb. I have received many comments from both friends and strangers about our new front porch, particularly the steps on both sides. I like to tell people who stop to admire the work that I'm seriously considering moving my furniture to the porch as it's now the nicest "room" of my house. Finally, Paul is to be commended for his after-sale service. Unbeknownst to myself or my neighbor he has been monitoring the condition of our porch roof as it awaits its final repair next spring and has been doing his best with temporary repairs to keep the squirrels out. The man is a gem and I am looking forward to working with him again.

We hired Paul Denys to restore the wooden windows in our 1910 house, because he was one of very few who knew what to do, and was supportive of the idea, whereas most suggested replacing the windows. The windows turned out even better than we expected for the same cost of replacing them with new high-end windows. We are happy with the look, the functionality, and the fact we didn't toss perfectly good windows. He sourced fantastic storms which do not require a ladder every season. And during the process, we decided to have him and his crew work on the re-painting of the house exterior, which we had planned for another contractor. But Paul's knowledge of heritage homes, and our confidence in his workmanship and professionalism made it an easy decision. And we were very happy with the end result!

PATTERSON HOUSE September 2, 2012

Paul built us a dream kitchen. Seven years after our reno I still marvel at how perfectly it turned out. There is nothing I would change. This was our first reno and Paul taught us so much about design and details. I had no idea there were so many details to consider - lucky for us, Paul knew exactly what he was doing. He and his crew were a treat to have in the house - we missed them when they were gone. After our job was finished, if I had any questions Paul got back to me with an answer within a few minutes - often even just showing up at the door to help. He is an exceptionally nice person with a real can-do attitude. I think we were really lucky to have chosen him to do our job.

I hired Paul Denys to redo my kitchen – a job that we estimated would take about 2 months. We had a number of pre-construction discussions about design, materials, appliances, and so on, so that everything was pretty much set up in advance. I learned a lot about colour and design from Paul, and he saved me a lot of running around and potential headaches by steering me in the direction of reliable trades-people. As is often the case with older homes, once he started working on the kitchen (an addition from the ‘70s) he discovered that it was structurally unsound – sloping floor inadequately supported from below, sagging roof inadequately supported and not insulated, walls not insulated and poorly constructed… He and his cheerful apprentice Sandy ended up almost entirely rebuilding the kitchen addition from the inside out, then installed the actual kitchen as we had so carefully planned it. I would not have invested in this degree of reconstruction and kitchen installation, if I had not quickly recognized that Paul is a master builder with solid design sense, high standards and collaborative approach. I trusted his judgment and workmanship entirely and was never less than fully satisfied with the results. My kitchen is now solid, level and warm; aesthetically pleasing and integrated with the rest of the house; and extremely functional. It has become my favourite room in the house. I would recommend Paul without hesitation to anyone interested in investing in quality workmanship.

NON-MEMBER June 15, 2012

We checked out 3 contractors to do work on our 1877 heritage house. Paul came out ahead of all others in our conversations with other clients so we retained him. He's exceedingly knowledgeable about older houses and brings care and professionalism to his work. No hesitation in recommending him to others, we'd certainly hire him again if the need arises.

We had an exellent working relationship with Paul and his associates on many occasions. On each occasion, we were very happy with the end product.

We own a victorian home in Ottawa, and Paul has been very senstive to the age of the home, as well as our need to preserve and maintain the historical and architectural elements of the house.

Paul is easy to work with and provides guidance and options throughout the project. This makes for a pleasurable experience.

Paul Denys and his assistants were courteous, professional and timely. He presented good ideas and his work was of high quality. He did a major kitchen renovation and added a new mudroom. He also had to replace flooring, wiring, plumbing and windows throughout. The work was done while we were living in the house and the disruption was kept to a minimum which was greatly appreciated. I would not hesitate to recommend Denys Builds Designs to anyone looking for quality work.

LIZ AND ROBERT December 7, 2010

Paul Denys and his staff provided creative and expert advice in order to meet our renovation needs and budget. Our family lived in the home during the renovations with little disruption as the site was cleaned daily and great care was taken to minimize dust, protect our belongings and safely store tools and equipment. This was important to us as we have young children.

The quality work and attention to detail exceeded our expectations. We have friends who have used other contractors and have been very disappointed and left to correct costly mistakes. With Denys Builds Design, we did not have to worry. Work was done in a professional manner, on schedule and in consultation with us. It was worth every penny! We have no hesitation in recommending the company and would certainly use them again.

We had a small deck out back and asked Paul to come add a secondary deck to connect with it. We had ideas (even sketchy pictures)as a starting place. Paul listened to our ideas and offered some of his own. The final product is perfect for the area. It blends with the old deck so well they look like they were built at the same time. Paul and Robert were pleasant to work with and very conscientious about their work and the work area.

Paul was meticulous, a great source of ideas and a great person with whom to work. The 4 hammers under timeliness are only because with heritage renos there are often issues of time - not his fault, just that is how it often is as surprises are encountered. We were able to contribute some sweat equity where appropriate - always with assistance and advice from Paul - and could discuss options and ideas freely. Am planning another project with this firm - and would recommend to anyone looking for a professional with skills, high standards and lots of good ideas.

EXPECTATIONS EXCEEDED February 15, 2009
By: LGM

Would not hesitate to recommend Denys Builds Designs. I have worked with them on small projects but also on a major restoration project on a turn of the century house. From consultation to final product was a journey I would do again - in fact am doing again this year. Professional, knowledgeable, respectful of both the building and its owners - and the cleanest worksite I have ever experienced. You cannot go wrong.
