I was referred to Bochner by my Optometrist. I've had a cataract in my left eye for almost my entire life which occurred due to an accidental blow to it when I was a child (I am now 40 years old). I went to Bochner and they ran tests etc., prior to Dr. Stein coming in. Dr. Stein came in, introduced himself and was not very friendly nor informative. Cold is what I would term it as. Not that he needs to be, but he should have a better bedside manner with patients. I was speaking to him and you could clearly see that he wasn't paying attention to me. He was in with me for all of maybe two minutes and just said that the cataract could be removed without really investigating and getting the in-depth background on it. I guess because he has removed so many of them he assumed all was the same. I left there disappointed and unsure of anything as there was no reassurance or questions answered.
A couple weeks after this horrible appointment, I received a package from Bochner with instructions for how to prepare for surgery as they booked me... What?!? I didn't say I was going for surgery, and how would they know as I was not told anything. I called them and stated that I did not say I was going to have the surgery especially leaving the appointment the way that I did. I expressed my displeasure and that was that.
I went back to my optometrist and informed him of my experience at Bochner. He then referred me to specialists at Toronto Western Hospital. Long story short not only did I have a cataract, it was determined that had a detached retina. The surgery would be a lot more intensive. I informed them about how Bochner/Dr. Stein was just going to remove the cataract. They told me I could have lost my eye entirely! They just shook their heads as to the obvious possible severity of the situation.
This happened to a few years ago and the only reason I've decided to write this, is because a friend of mine just came from an appointment there. She stated to me that Dr. Stein was 'cold', 'didn't seem to be listening to me' and was 'in/out in a couple of minutes'. She left there feeling the way that I did - unsure and uneasy.
We use our eyes to see the world. They should not be treated as products on an assembly line in a Factory.
When it comes to Bochner: Buyer beware
